Republican Congressman Cao on Health Care Reform: "Aye!"

advertisement

HR 3962, the "Affordable Health Care for America Act" passed the House of Representatives shortly after 11pm eastern time tonight, 220 - 215. Democrats needed 218 votes to pass the bill and after working hard to whip up the vote count this weekend they were able to pass their version of health care reform with one Democratic vote to spare, and managed to pick up a single Republican vote, that of first term Louisiana Congressman Joseph Cao. There was little indication before this evening that any member of the Republican caucus would defect during the final vote. This is a major step in the healthcare reform process and further along than Democrats were able to get in the 1990's. The focus of the health care reform battle now shifts to the Senate, although I imagine a battle is just heating up within the Louisiana Republican party.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

This guy is from a democrat district. He replaced William J. Jefferson, who liked to keep his bribes stashed in a freezer. Why he didn't run as a democrat is beyond me. But, this gives the democrats all the excuse they need to crow that the bill passed with bipartisan support.

Spirit... you had 39 Dems that voted against it. I also could wonder why they didn't run as Reps. See how easy that is.
